The other day, my family hosted a group of friends for a potluck in our home. As we were enjoying coffee and dessert, one of the guests shared a story that included that she had previously worked at Blockbuster Video. I interrupted her story to turn to the 25-year-old at the table and asked if she knew what Blockbuster was. Slightly bemused and confused, she said, “No.” Immediately, the rest of the table erupted into laughter, followed by those over 40 doing their best to describe a video store to a young person who has only known streaming services with instant and unlimited content anywhere, anytime, on any device.
As we described the video store experience with phrases like, “You had to get in your car and drive there,” “You had to physically look for the movie you wanted,” and “The movie you wanted may or may not have been in stock,” the whole experience felt like something from ancient history. The trip down memory lane ended with a wistful, “It made sense at the time!”
I’ll get straight to the point. If you’re a construction company self-performing payroll in 2024, it’s time to re-think your strategy and upgrade your platform. Self-performing made sense in a previous time when your options for handling the complexity of construction payroll were much more limited. But that's no longer the case.
Outsourcing payroll and HR provides a number of significant benefits that enable you to:
- Optimize employee time and resources—Eliminate manual processes and reporting, allowing your employees to be more strategic and achieve greater work-life balance.
- Reduce compliance risk and improve accuracy—Let folks who do compliance for a living make sure that you’re up to date on all the details of tax laws, payroll, and industry regulations.
- Improve tools for your employees—Increase job satisfaction and retention by making it easy for your team to onboard, update HR and benefits-related information, enter time, request PTO, etc.
- Consolidate disparate systems—Combine payroll, HR, time tracking, employee scheduling, and even expense entry in a single application.
- Integrate solutions—Streamline integration with your accounting and job costing solution to eliminate double entry of employees, jobs, cost codes, and cost types, which inevitably improves team efficiency and accuracy out in the field and in the office.
